history

First plug-in power supply in the world

The brand and company name Friwo goes back to the company Friemann & Wolf founded by Carl Wolf in Zwickau in western Saxony in 1881 . With the invention of the petrol safety mine lamp for the coal mining industry , Friemann & Wolf became one of the first global companies in Germany towards the end of the nineteenth century. After the Second World War, the company was expropriated as an arms manufacturer in the Soviet zone of occupation without compensation. The new headquarters of Friemann & Wolf in western Germany emerged from the Duisburg branch. In 1971 the Friwo Gerätebau GmbH (FWGB) was founded in Duisburg and at the same time a production company was acquired in Ostbevern. With this establishment, the previous mining lamp and mining accessories manufacturer Friemann & Wolf created a new business area. In the same year, the development and production start-up of the world's first plug-in power supply followed.

In 1973 sales exceeded the DM 10 million mark and around 5000 devices were manufactured per day. In 1979 a separate building was built for the development department. In 1981 the company was able to achieve a market share of 60 percent and thus market leadership with 20 million power packs and chargers sold to date.

In 1983 Friemann & Wolf and with it Friwo Gerätebau were bought by CEAG . Under the umbrella of CEAG, the export share of devices still sold under the Friwo brand name rose to 55 percent in 1984. In 1990 Friwo strengthened its global ambitions by founding Friwo North America in Frederick / USA and Friwo Far East Ltd. with manufacturing facilities in Shenzhen. In 2001, it continued its internationalization with the opening of Friwo Tokyo in Japan and Friwo São Paulo in Brazil.

Sales also increased at the end of the 1980s: after around DM 48 million in 1986, only four years later it reached an annual volume of DM 100 million. In 1991, the competitor Bartec-Compit was bought. In 1992 Friwo was the first company in the industry to be certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001 . A year later, the first charger for NiMH batteries was developed. Also in 1993 Friwo merged with its subsidiary Silberkraft Lichtakkumulatoren GmbH to form Friwo Silberkraft GmbH. In 1994 the mining lamp production was stopped.

In 1997 Silberkraft Lichtakkumulatoren was taken over by Exide, while Friwo Gerätebau GmbH remained with CEAG. With a share of around 25%, the company was the world market leader in mobile phone chargers.

In 2002 Friwo's business was divided into two business areas, Friwo Mobile Power (FMP) and Friwo Power Solutions (FPS). Three years after this division and ten years after the production and sale of the 100 millionth device, Friwo exceeded the total sales volume of one billion devices in 2005.

In 2008, the Friwo Mobile Power division (now Flextronics Power) was sold, then Cardea Holding GmbH, a subsidiary of VTC Industrieholding GmbH, acquired 76.8 percent of CEAG shares from Delton AG.

On May 25, 2009, CEAG was renamed Friwo AG.

In 2010 the company started manufacturing Led drivers, followed by battery packs in 2014 .

In 2016, a production facility in Vietnam was opened in Dong Nai . In the same year, FRIWO acquired a converter and choke production facility near the Vietnamese city of Ho Chi Min . In January 2018 FRIWO was certified according to DIN EN ISO 13485 for the first time. In December 2018 FRIWO took over Emerge Engineering, a developer and manufacturer of components for electric drives.
