Froma I. Zeitlin

Froma I. Zeitlin (born May 9, 1933 in New York City ) is an American classical philologist .

Froma Zeitlin studied at Radcliffe College ( BA 1954) and at the Catholic University of America ( MA 1965). From 1969 she taught as Instructor in Classics at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York . At the same time she worked at Columbia University on her PhD , which she achieved in 1970. She then went to Douglass College at Rutgers University as an assistant professor .

In 1992 Froma Zeitlin was appointed Charles Ewing Professor of Greek Language and Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature at Princeton University . Since 1996 she has also headed the Judaic Department at Princeton University. In 1995/1996 she was invited to the University of California, Berkeley as Sather Professor .

Froma Zeitlin was one of the first classical scholars to methodically apply structuralism , semiotics and gender studies to ancient literature. She has written numerous essays and monographs dealing with overarching cultural issues, often based on Greek tragedy. Her books Under the Sign of the Shield (1982) and Playing the Other (1996) are considered standard works.

In 2001 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
