S. Stanhope Orris

Samuel Stanhope Orris , mostly abbreviated: S. Stanhope Orris (born February 19, 1838 in Icksburgh , Pennsylvania , † December 17, 1905 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania), was an American classical philologist .

Life

Samuel Stanhope Orris studied at the College of New Jersey at Princeton , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1862 . In 1865 he graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary and earned a Master of Arts . After a year teaching, he was ordained a priest in May 1866 and appointed to lead the Presbyterian ward in Spruce Creek, Pennsylvania . From 1869 to 1870 he deepened his studies at a German university.

Upon his return, Orris worked in the New York Reformed Church's mission chapel . In 1873 he moved to Marietta College as Professor of Greek . At the College of New Jersey ( Princeton University since 1896 ), where he received his Ph.D. In 1877 he was appointed Associate Professor of Greek Language and Literature and Instructor in Greek Philosophy . The following year he was promoted to full professor . From 1888 to 1889 he was the Annual Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens . In 1889 he received the title Doctor of Letters from Lafayette College . From 1889 to 1890 he was director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. In 1902 he retired from Princeton .

Orris was mainly concerned with the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle .
