Course of action
Frontlines: Fuel of War is set in a dystopian world in 2024, amid a global energy crisis . The plot of the game is told and reflected on in a politically critical way from the perspective of an embedded journalist , a war reporter. The game not only includes acts of war and their development, but also the upheavals in democratic societies in view of the global situation.
As oil / gas supplies dwindle, diplomatic ties between East and West are broken off and new alliances are formed . The two main alliances in Frontlines are the Western Coalition, consisting of the European Union and the United States , and the Red Star Alliance, founded by the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China . When the last oil fields begin to dry up, the countries secure the last raw material reserves with military intervention. The resulting skirmishes escalate into a global war as the game progresses. Towards the end of the game, the Western Coalition wins and pushes the Russian Red Star troops into the Urals.
The game includes some political commentary on how much wars cost, including raw materials. One sentence in the game reads: " How could a war over oil be fought, with machines that refilled upon it " (German: "How can a war over oil be waged with machines that are operated with just this ? ")
Gameplay
Frontlines includes both a single player - campaign and a multiplayer mode. The game offers the player various vehicles, air support and electronic warfare to complete the missions. The weapons are slightly futuristic, but their shape is reminiscent of real weapons.
Various ground and air vehicles are available to the player in both single and multiplayer. Including u. a. Jeeps, tanks, helicopters and fighter jets. Furthermore, the player has the opportunity to make use of drone technology , as well as air support, e.g. B. in the form of artillery strikes to request. The weapons depend on the respective faction and are assigned using a classic class system.
The name Frontlines is derived from the game mechanics . Since the front line always runs along the currently contested mission / control points and all other points are deactivated, the main battles usually take place along the front line. Only when the mission points have been fulfilled does the front line move further towards the enemy base. This should also reduce the radius of action in battles with smaller teams.
The multiplayer mode takes place on maps of different sizes and allows up to 32 players in two factions to compete against each other. The two game factions fight for different control points or have to complete missions, such as switching off / destroying a functional unit. The map sizes vary greatly and offer city missions as well as larger desert areas and night missions. Some structures, e.g. B. walls can be destroyed without the use of additional hardware . A recovery system is used as the wounding model, which signals the injury not by means of a bar but by means of an audio - visual restriction of perception . The alter ego recovers independently after a short recovery phase.
development
The game is based on the Unreal Engine 3 and uses EAX 5.0 effects of the sound card via OpenAL . The game also calculates the speed of sound; any noises often hit the player later as light. Antialiasing support is provided by Frontlines: Fuel of War only via external measures. It is also possible to use PhysX acceleration in Frontlines . The software for setting up dedicated servers is only available for Windows . Punkbuster was integrated as anti-cheat software.
Originally Frontlines: Fuel of War was also developed for the PlayStation 3 , but publisher THQ announced that the work on January 24, 2008 was due to problems with the development for the PS3.
