The Frosnitzkees is a glacier in the Venediger group . It extends between Weißspitze and Kristallwand in the municipality of Matrei in Osttirol ( East Tyrol ).

location

The Frosnitzkees is located at the collision of the Eichhamstock with the high glacier roof close to the municipality boundary to Prägraten am Großvenediger . In the northwest, the ridge between Stein am Ferner ( 3246  m above sea level ) and Kristallwand ( 3310  m above sea level ) forms the border with the Outer Mullwitzkees , in the southwest it borders between Stein am Ferner and Weißspitze ( 3300  m above sea level). ) located Frosnitztörl ( 3110  m above sea level ) the Frosnitzkees from the Zettalunitzkees . Along with many other glaciers such as the Schlatenkees or Venedigerkees the Frosnitzkees forms the largest contiguous Firnhaubengletscher the Eastern Alps.

In the south, the Weißspitze, the Vordere Seekopf ( 3282  m above sea level ), the Rear Seekopf ( 3234  m above sea level ) and the Hohe Achsel ( 3161  m above sea level ) form the south facade of the Frosnitzkees. The closest refuge is the Badener Hütte below the Frosnitzkees .

history

In the middle of the 19th century, the Frosnitzkees reached below 2400 meters and thus still southeast of the Badener Hütte. In addition, it was still connected to the Kristallwandkees in the north . However, due to the glacier retreat since 1850 , this connection was lost and the glacier retreated about 2 kilometers to the west.

Due to the low transfluence between the Kristallwand and the Weißspitze, the Frosnitzkees are expected to separate from the connected Firnhauben glacier as soon as the tendency of the glacier retreat continues. At the Kristallwandkees this separation has already taken place.
