The Hintere Seekopf ( 3234  m above sea level ) is a mountain peak of the Eichhamstock in the Venediger group in East Tyrol ( Austria ). It lies on the border between the communities of Matrei in East Tyrol and Prägraten am Großvenediger . Neighboring peaks are the Vorderer Seekopf in the northeast, the Hohe Achsel in the east and the Kleine Hexenkopf in the south. The first ascent took place on August 13, 1898 by H. v. Ficker and L. Prochaska.

location

The Hintere Seekopf lies in the north of the Eichhamstock in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park . South-east, the valley of is ice sea with the Eisseehütte and Timmeltal , in the north-east the Löbbental with Baden's hut and to the east the Frosnitztal . With the only marginally higher, north-west located Vorderen Seekopf 3280  m above sea level. A. the Hintere Seekopf is connected by the northwest ridge, with the Hohe Achsel 3161  m above sea level. A. through the east ridge. The south ridge leads down to the Seekopfscharte 3,042  m above sea level. A. , where a transition to the Kleine Hexenkopf 3144  m above sea level. A. is possible. The Garaneberkees stretches between the Weißspitze, the Seeköpf and the Hexenköpf, in the north is the mighty Frosnitzkees . In the Seekopfscharte, the Garaneberkees also collides with the Malfrosnitzkees.

Promotion opportunities

The Hintere Seekopf is an alpine subordinate mountain, but also serves as a winter destination. The normal route to the Hinteren Seekopf takes place via the Eisseehütte and the Eissee, whereby the ascent then leads pathless to the east over Steinhalden in the direction of the Seekopfscharte. Before the beginning of the Garaneberkees, the ascent is left keeping in a straight line to the summit of the Hinteren Seekopf. The Vordere Seekopf can also be climbed from the Hinteren Seekopf via the almost level, around 500 meter long connecting ridge.

As an alternative, the Seekopf can also be climbed from the Wallhorntörl in the same way as the first ascent, whereby the Garaneberkees is climbed here and shortly afterwards the snow peak is reached in the north-west arch (difficulty I according to UIAA ). Another variant is the south ridge, which was used as a descent by the first climbers. The consistently not steep rock ridge from the Seekopfscharte to the summit is chosen (difficulty I according to UIAA). In addition, the ascent can take place via the east ridge, which was first climbed on July 28, 1905 by the first to climb the Vorderen Seekopf. (Difficulty II according to UIAA).
