Hohe Achsel (Tyrol)
High armpit
First ascent July 28, 1905 by Ingenuin Hechenblaikner and Eduard Franzelin over the northwest ridge

The Hohe Achsel ( 3161  m above sea level ) is a mountain peak of the Eichhamstock in the Venediger group in East Tyrol ( Austria ). It is located in the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol . Neighboring peaks are the Hintere and Vordere Seekopf in the west and the Kleine and Große Hexenkopf in the southwest. The first ascent took place on July 28, 1905 by Ingenuin Hechenblaikner and Eduard Franzelin over the northwest ridge.

location

The Hohe Achsel forms the northeast end of the Eichhamstock or a wide corner bastion in the east of the ridge branching off from the Hinteren Seekopf to the slope towards the Frosnitz valley. The Hohe Achsel, located in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park , forms the southern facade of the Frosnitzkees as a wide rock belt , which extends over the two lake heads to the Weißspitze. In addition to the actual summit ( 3161  m above sea level ), a distinction is made between the east shoulder ( 3039  m above sea level ) and the north shoulder ( 3118  m above sea level ). The Kleine Achselkees runs to the east shoulder, at the north shoulder the north face drops to the Frosnitzkees. On the east shoulder there is also the northeast ridge, which, like the jagged southeast ridge, slopes down to the Frosnitz valley. In the south, the south ridge runs with a southeast arch to the Achselsattel ( 2710  m above sea level ), followed by the Schober ( 2745  m above sea level ). In the west, the Seekopfscharte ( 3061  m above sea level ) separates the Hohe Achsel from the Hinteren Seekopf ( 3234  m above sea level ).

Ascent

High armpit from the northeast (Wildenkogel)

The Hohe Achsel can be climbed from three huts. From the Badener Hütte the ascent takes place via the Venediger Höhenweg in the direction of Galtenscharte to the Malfrosnitzbach, where you then follow the creek into Malfrosnitz before you pass the Hexenkees to the northernmost valley basin. Then you get to the east over the medium-steep, rock-interspersed southwest flank on the summit ridge, over which the ascent to the summit takes place. As a variant, the aforementioned basin can also be accessed from the Bonn-Matreier Hütte , with the one going via the Galtenscharte into Malfrosnitz. In addition, the Hohe Achsel can also be climbed from the Eisseehütte , where after the Eissee the Seekopfscharte is climbed, from which the slope on the southeast side of the Hinteren Seekopf is crossed to the west ridge and over this the ascent to the summit takes place.
