The Great Hexenkopf is 3314 m above sea level. A. high mountain peak of the Eichhamstock in the Venediger group in East Tyrol ( Austria ). It lies on the border between the communities of Matrei in East Tyrol and Prägraten am Großvenediger . Neighboring peaks are the Hohe Eichham in the south and the Kleine Hexenkopf in the northeast.

The Große Hexenkopf is located in the north of the Eichhamstock in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park . To the east of the valley of is ice sea with the Eisseehütte and Timmeltal , in the north-east the Löbbental with Baden's hut and to the east the Frosnitztal . The Große Hexenkopf on the northeast ridge is separated from the Kleiner Hexenkopf ( 3194 m above sea level ) by the Hexenkopfscharte ( 3144 m above sea level ), with the Garaneberkees in the north reaching up to the ridge. The Garaneberkees extends between the Weißspitze and the Seeköpf up to the Hexenköpf. The Hexenkees also extends southeast of the Großer Hexenkopfes, between the south ridge and the northeast ridge or between the Hexenköpf and Eichham.
Promotion opportunities
The normal route to the Großer Hexenkopf leads over the Eisseehütte into the steep cirque between Hexenkopf and Eichham to just below the northern Eichhamscharte. Then the ascent takes place over the southwest flank and the south ridge in easy climbing on partially brittle rock to the summit (difficulty I + according to UIAA ). The northeast ridge, which is the shortest climbing ridge of the Hexenkopf and has a difficulty of III, is another way to climb. In addition, there is the possibility to climb the Hexenkopf over the west ridge in a long ridge climb with mostly solid rock (difficulty II + according to UIAA).
