The fruit hall was built in 1853/54 shortly after the unrest of the Baden Revolution in the center of what was then the fortress town of Rastatt and initially served as a market hall . In terms of style, it can be assigned to the round arch style represented by the Karlsruhe building director Heinrich Hübsch . After many renovations and conversions, most recently as a town hall, the sandstone building was given its present-day appearance by the Karlsruhe architect Helmut Bätzner , who gained fame through the building of the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe.

The Städtische Galerie Fruchthalle Rastatt with a foundation by Diethelm Lütze and the Art Collection in Baden after 1945 has been on the premises since June 18, 1993 , along with a few temporary exhibitions. The main work of the exhibition is the woodcut collage Ways of World Wisdom: The Hermann Battle by the artist Anselm Kiefer, who grew up in Rastatt . Some of the upper rooms are still used by the Rastatt administration.

On the facade there are 19 round windows with colorful majolica panes and a bronze head by Jürgen Goertz , who represents the muse of the fine arts.
