history

After the division of Berlin following the Second World War in 1945, the previous central market halls on Alexanderplatz were located in the eastern part of the city, which is increasingly difficult to reach . The fruit and vegetable wholesalers based in the western part of Berlin turned to the Berlin magistrate to set up and operate their own central wholesale market for the western sectors of Berlin. However, because the state did not have funds for this, they were asked to do so independently. That was the hour of birth of the Fruchthof Berlin Verwaltungsgenossenschaft eG. From 1949 to 1965, the cooperative operated the fruit and vegetable wholesale market and central wholesale market facilities, initially in Mariendorf and from March 20, 1965 on the wholesale market site in Beusselstrasse. In the first few years of its existence, it brokered around 90% of West Berlin sales in fruit, vegetables, southern and dried fruit.

In 2007, the approximately 30,000 square meter large Fruchthofhalle was renovated together with Berliner Großmarkt GmbH and reopened on March 20, 2008.

Under the leadership of the Fruchthof, the Food and Freshness Cluster Berlin (IG LFC Berlin) interest group was founded on August 1st, 2017. The IG LFC Berlin organizes dealers from the fruit farm, meat and flower wholesale market who are represented at the wholesale market. It is supported by more than 100 companies at the location - also by Markthalle IX in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The IG's spokesman is Dieter Krauss, Fruchthof's board member. IG LFC Berlin aims to acquire a heritable building right for the entire wholesale market area. With optimized buildings and improved infrastructure at a fundamentally modernized location, retailers should be able to make their contribution to Berlin's supply even better and more effectively in the future.
