Fu Long , 福 龙, Fú Lóng, ("Happy Dragon") is a panda ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca ) that was born on August 23, 2007 in Vienna's Schönbrunn Zoo .

background

The panda cub achieved a special level of popularity, as panda bears rarely mate in captivity. Fu Long is only the second panda to be born in captivity in Europe. The first one in 1982 in the Madrid Zoo, however, was achieved with the help of artificial insemination . Fu Long left Schönbrunn Zoo on November 18, 2009 for China . There "the happy dragon" lives in the panda breeding and research station Bifengxia . In a few years' time, he is to provide for offspring himself and contribute to the preservation of his species as part of the breeding program.

The little panda was given the name Fu Long by Wu Ken, the Chinese ambassador to Austria, at a ceremony in early December 2007. The animal child, whose godparents also included the then Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik , slept through the entire ceremony. From the end of January 2008, visitors to Schönbrunn could go back to the indoor enclosure to watch the little panda.

The ORF had dedicated its own TV show to the panda with Panda TV . This made him known to the public, although he had only left his litter box at the end of January 2008.

As agreed in the contract with the People's Republic of China , Fu Long was moved to the panda breeding and research station in Bifengxia , around 150 kilometers from Chengdu , on November 18, 2009 .

On August 23, 2010, exactly three years to the day after the birth of Fu Long, his mother Yang Yang gave birth to another panda cub who was baptized with the name Fu Hu . Fu Hu subsequently came to Bifengxia as well. Brother Fu Bao , born on August 14, 2013, also came to China in November 2015, albeit to the Dujiangyan panda station , before moving to the Sanjiang eco-tourism station on January 10, 2017 .

At the beginning of 2015 there were still fears for the life of the panda, as a viral disease that was often fatal for pandas had broken out at that time.

On December 9, 2016, his father Long Hui died at the age of 16 during an emergency examination after a tumor had been removed from his abdomen days earlier. The twins Fu Feng and Fu Ban and thus further siblings Fu Long were born in August of the same year .

Naming

Schönbrunn Zoo put the name of the panda bear to the vote on the Internet. Over 26,000 people took part in the vote. In addition to Fu Long , the names Mei Yue (“beautiful music”), Zhu Wa (“bamboo boy”) and Hua Shan (one of the five holy mountains) were available. At the moment, a dispute has broken out about the “Fu Long” brand , as a German had it protected in the German patent office in October 2007.

Trivia

The Austrian singer Toni Knittel published a song about the little panda in November 2007 with the title Fu Long, little giant panda bear , which has since been broadcast on KI.KA.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing has ZDF his mascot to Fu Long baptized.
