Fuente García
The Fuente Garcia is considered the source of the River Tagus in the mountains of the Sierra de Albarracín in the province of Teruel in Spain .
The location of the source is itself mostly with the location of the monument Nacimiento del Tajo ( Tajo source ) equated the 200 meters next to the road A-1704 between Teruel and Cuenca at a distance of 10 km from the small town of Frías de Albarracín to a local connecting road on a spacious plateau.
The monument is entered in the topographical map of the IDEARAGON below the contour line for 1570 msnm , i.e. it is about 1567 m above sea level. Other sources often mention an altitude of 1593 m.
The monument to José Gonzalvo Vives was unveiled in 1974. It is an allegory of the River Tagus, represented by the great figure of the Father Tagus surrounded by the three provinces of the headwaters, Teruel , represented by a bull with a star, Cuenca by a vase with a star representing the Grail and Guadalajara by a knight in Armor with helmet and spear.
At the edge of the monument there is - mostly unnoticed - a landmark under which water flows from a pipe that is led in a channel under the street to a pond. The Tagus takes its course from this pond.
Like the immediate vicinity of the monument, including the parking lot and driveway, the pond was created in 2010 to channel the increasing tourism.
However, the responsible authority erected the landmark in 1877. On its southern side is engraved: Arroyo de Fuente García , on the opposite side Arroyo de Navaseca and on the western side Origen del Tajo ( origin of the Tajo ). The abbreviation of the authority and the year can be read on the back: OH de Madrid - 1877 . The Arroyo de Fuente García , like the Arroyo de Navaseca , is more of a trickle than a stream that often dries up. They were taken by the landmark and brought together under it, so that on most days some water runs out of the Origen del Tajo .
The Arroyo de Fuente García can be followed through a wide meadow valley in a south-easterly direction to Fuente García , the García spring , about 1.4 km away ( 40 ° 18 ′ 47.1 ″ N , 1 ° 41 ′ 15 ″ W ) .
On the topographical map of the IDEARAGON, the Fuente García is entered below the contour line for 1630 msnm, i.e. it is about 1627 m above sea level.
However, it is disputed that the Fuente Garcia is the source of the Tagus. In addition to the Arroyo de Navaseca, there are several other small streams that are longer but have not yet been recognized as the source of the Tagus.
