Fura-2 is a fluorescent dye that forms chelate complexes with calcium cations (Ca 2+ ) and is used to determine the intracellular calcium concentration. Fura-2 is available as a pentapotassium or pentasodium salt. With the Fura-2AM (Fura-2-Acetoxymethylester) a membrane-permeable derivative is also known.

The calcium complex can be excited with UV light (340  nm to 380 nm) and fluoresces in the visible range. For the photometric determination of the concentration, the emission is observed at approx. 510 nm. The emission rate at this wavelength is directly proportional to the concentration of the (intracellular) calcium ions.
