description

Furcraea hexapetala forms up to 1 meter high, thick stems and is rhizomatous . Occasionally there are numerous basal offshoots. The up to 80 straight, lanceolate leaves are almost flat in the middle and become runny towards the tip. Their bright green, leathery leaf blades are slightly rough on the underside and are 115 to 175 centimeters long (rarely 100 to 200 centimeters) and 8 to 10 centimeters (rarely up to 15 centimeters) wide. At the pointed tip of the leaf there is an indistinct tip. The strongly upwardly curved, 6 to 11 millimeter long peripheral teeth sit on triangular bases and usually run down. They are yellowish to brownish and are 3 to 7 centimeters (rarely up to 12 centimeters) apart.

The egg-shaped bulbil bearing, pyramidal branched inflorescence reaches a height of up to 1.6 meters. The bell-shaped, pendulous flowers are on 4 to 10 millimeter long flower stalks . They are single or stand together in clusters of two or four. The flowers have a length of 38 to 46 & millimeters (rarely 30 to 50 & millimeters). Their elongated whitish tepals are 21 to 25 millimeters (rarely 17 to 30 millimeters) long and 6 to 10 millimeters wide. The stamens are 15 to 30 millimeters long. The ovary has a length 17 to 21 mm and the stylus to 15 to 30 millimeters.

The broadly elongated fruits , constricted at their base and deeply furrowed, are beaked at their tips. They reach a length of 3 to 5 centimeters and a width of 2.5 to 4 centimeters. The fruits contain 12 to 14 millimeters long and 4 to 6 millimeters wide seeds that are flat.

Systematics and distribution

Furcraea hexapetala is common in the Bahamas as well as in western Cuba , Jamaica and Hispaniola . According to R. Govaerts, it also occurs in southeastern Mexico and from the Caribbean to Ecuador.

The first description as Agave hexapetala by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin was published in 1760. Ignatz Urban placed the species in the genus Furcraea in 1903 . Furcraea hexapetala is classified in the genus in the section Furcraea .
