Fusarium poae is a species of mold thatbelongs tothe genus Fusarium . The fungi cause ear diseases on cereals and produce harmful mycotoxins in the process . The type and number of mycotoxins in F. poae , in contrast to other Fusarium species, has not yet been researched. However, it is assumed that there is considerable mycotoxin contamination on infected wheat , which could also be problematic for humans.
Detection of F. poae on cereal grains
Infested cereal plants can be examined for F. poae by surface- sterilizing the cereal grains, placing them in Petri dishes on potato-dextrose agar that has been treated with antibiotics and incubating them for a few days . The growing F. poae mushroom cultures have a pleasant scent that is characteristic of this species of Fusarium, which many people describe as “after apple”; However, smelling the fungal cultures should be avoided, as millions of fungal spores ( conidia ) are inhaled. In terms of its macroscopic appearance on the agar plate, the fungus is very variable: it can be either pale wine-red or almost white. In general, the color of the fungus increases with age. In general, it produces abundant aerial mycelia. Thousands of drop-shaped microconidia and boat-shaped macroconidia are visible under the microscope at 200x magnification.
