FutureLearn
FutureLearn is a web platform on which numerous providers offer online educational courses.
Emergence
The platform was founded in December 2012 by the Open University . Eleven other UK universities were founding partners: University of Birmingham , University of Bristol , Cardiff University , University of East Anglia , University of Exeter , King's College London , Lancaster University , University of Leeds , University of Southampton , University of St Andrews and University of Warwick . The establishment was described as a " fight back " so that the British educational institutions can get involved in the field of open mass online courses ( MOOC ) on this basis .
The offer went online in October 2013. In November 2019 FutureLearn announced that the number of 10 million learners had been reached and that it was offering 2,400 different courses.
According to the Financial Times , FutureLearn was the first platform to enable students to study undergraduate degrees at leading UK universities from their smartphone or tablet .
In May 2019 FutureLearn announced that the Australian company SEEK Ltd. Will invest £ 50 million in the platform for a 50 percent stake in the company. Since then, the company has been partly owned by the Open University and the Seek Group.
Operating model
FutureLearn does not create any courses itself, but rather works with educational providers such as universities , institutions, companies and government institutions. These partners create all content while FutureLearn operates the platform, manages the content and makes it available online.
Participation in the courses is free of charge, but a fee is charged for issuing certificates with identity verification.

FutureLearn has partnerships with many educational providers, including 80 universities, 6 centers of excellence at universities, 48 organizations and 30 associated partners (as of January 2020). The partner universities include many British universities, the University of Basel and, from France, the École nationale de l'aviation civile , the Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace and the Grenoble École de Management .
Courses
FutureLearn offers u. a. Courses in aviation, computer science, medicine and biology, social sciences and humanities, arts, mathematics and statistics, economics and finance. New partnerships and courses will be added to the platform.
