location

The tower is located in the eastern part of the old city fortifications of the historic Quedlinburg Neustadt on the east side of the street Hinter der Mauer, a little north of the confluence of Kaiserstraße, at the address Hinter der Mauer 13.

History and architecture

The tower, built on a square floor plan, was built around 1170. In the time around 1340 the defense tower was rebuilt.

The background to the designation as a goose herding tower and a possible connection with animal husbandry is unclear. One statement mentions the tower as the goose herder's residence. According to a legend , the goose herders met regularly in the tower, from which the name is said to go back.
