Cowherd Tower (Quedlinburg)
The Kuhhirtenturm , also known as the Turm opm Tittenplan , is a medieval defense tower belonging to the listed city fortifications of the city of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt .
location
The tower is located in the eastern part of the old city fortifications of the historic Quedlinburger Neustadt on the east side of the street Hinter der Mauer, at the confluence with Kaiserstraße.
History and architecture
The defense tower was built around 1170. A renovation took place around 1340, another around 1900.
The background to the designation as a cowherd's tower and a possible connection with animal husbandry are unknown. The slim roof spire crowning the tower with several oriels is striking.
