Göran Hammarström

Ulf Göran Emil Hammarström (born April 9, 1922 in Landskrona ; † December 15, 2019 in Melbourne ) was a Swedish linguist and Romance scholar .

life and work

Hammarström studied from 1940 at Uppsala University with Johan Melander and Paul Falk and received his doctorate in 1953 with the dissertation Etude de phonétique auditive sur les parlers de l'Algarve (Uppsala 1953). From 1953 to 1965 he was a lecturer in Romance linguistics and from 1955 to 1965 lecturer and professor of phonetics at Uppsala University. From 1965 to 1987 he held the first Australian linguistics chair at Monash University in Melbourne . From 1994 to 1998 he held the chair for Romance Linguistics at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .
