history

Founding and twice runner-up

At the instigation of Wilhelm Friberg , Göteborgs FF was founded on August 20, 1897. The team was intended in particular to oppose Örgryte IS , Gothenburg's leading football club at the time, and Friberg was also involved in the founding of the club, as there were only a few teams that played according to association football rules at the time. In 1899 the team took part in the Svenska Mästerskapet organized by Svenska Idrottsförbundet . The soccer game, which takes place alongside athletics and gymnastics competitions, she lost to Örgryte IS by a 4-0 defeat and thus became Swedish runner-up. Three years later they took part in a league game for the first time, when a championship with Örgryte IS, who competed with four different teams, GFF and Gårda SK was created in Gothenburg . In 1903 the club participated again in the Swedish championship, this time with four teams. After a 5-1 win over Krokslätt IK , they made it to the finals, in which the team had to admit defeat to local rivals Göteborgs IF after a 2-5 defeat.

In 1910 Göteborgs FF won the first title with the regional championship. In the same year the team was one of the founding members of the Svenska series , the first national league in Sweden. With five wins in 14 games, the club finished the competition fifth. The following year, the Svenska series was overshadowed by the early exit of Vikingarnas FK and IFK Eskilstuna , which messed up the schedule. At the end of the season, the Göteborgs FF was eliminated from the competition and only played on a regional level. Due to the strong ties to Örgryte IS, merger plans arose, but these were rejected.

Crisis years

Göteborgs FF withdrew from the league as a result. As a result, the club only caused a stir with its annually held cup competitions for youth teams. Between 1924 and 1926 the club also held cup competitions for men's teams.

In 1927, Göteborgs FF reported back in regular play and entered the lower-class Gothenburg series . However, since there was a high turnover in players, the club was unsuccessful. After the club failed to play two matches due to a lack of players in 1929, it was excluded from playing. Since a number of members did not pay their dues due to the economic crisis, the association was about to be dissolved. However, it was able to consolidate, although initially only places at the bottom of the table could be occupied.

Between fourth and second division

In the season 1932/33 Göteborgs FF returned to the road to success and managed the relay victory, but missed promotion in the promotion round. In the following years the team occupied midfield positions in the fourth division. In 1942 they were promoted to the third division. After a seventh place in the first year in the Västsvenska Södra relay , the team intervened in the promotion race. After the runner-up behind Jonsereds IF in 1944, he won the relay in 1945. In the promotion games, the club defeated Trollhättans IF in the crucial playoff in Borås .

Göteborgs FF played in the second division against relegation. After the class was held one point ahead of IFK Tidaholm in the first year , the team ended the season on a relegation zone the following year and was then passed through to fourth division. In 1953 the team managed to return to the third division. There the club established itself in the middle of the table before he had to relegate again in 1958. In the following years he changed irregularly between the third and fourth level of play until it slipped into the fifth division in 1970. After rising again, he managed to return to the third division in 1973, where he played until relegation in 1983.

In the lower class league area

Göteborgs FF played from then on in the lower class league area. After a flying visit to the fourth division in the late 1980s, the club slipped into the sixth division in 1998, and later into the seventh division. 2009 succeeded with 13 wins in 20 season games as champions of season 5 B Gothenburg the return to the sixth level.
