Göttingen hitting scale 1808

The so-called Göttinger Hieber is a student Hiebwaffe with straight blade as in Degen , narrow sheet lined basket and a plurality of horizontally directed quillons as a hand protection as prevailed in the mid-18th century. The introduction was also motivated by the numerous, often fatal, accidents that occurred during shock metering with the Parisian shock swords that were customary up to that time and remained in use for a long time . As recently as 1766 there was such a fatal accident in Göttingen during a duel in the Michaelishaus . This duel on April 22nd, 1766 was the only one that ended fatally in Göttingen during the entire 18th century.

From the Göttinger Hieber the basket racket developed after 1767 , in the blunt version also the Hau rapier . The University of Göttingen was the first German university to switch from shock fencing to slash fencing, which required the introduction of new rules. These should have been introduced in Göttingen by the fencing master Christian Kastrop . They spread quickly and remained valid even where fights were mainly carried out with bells .

The Göttingen blow is also mentioned in the diary entries of the poet and writer Joseph von Eichendorff on May 11, 1806:

“The Westphalen gave their outgoing Baron von Himm a solennes committee. The colorful bustle on the great Berlin. The leading fellows with bare blows. Long procession of companions who are also riding. The carriage with the main character is drawn by 6 horses and driven by boys, also in Burschenwiks. Long train of wagons, one or more of each country team, with four horses, and also driven by fellow Viksians. Front and back and to the Seyten flank courses en petit, helmets, and Göttinger Hieber blank. - Magnificent view "
