Gülek is a place in the district of Tarsus in the Turkish province of Mersin . Until 2012 Gülek was a municipality with 2,934 inhabitants and then became part of the district town of Tarsus after a regional reform . The place is about 40 kilometers north of the district capital and 50 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital Mersin . The D-750 road runs through Gülek from north to south. The place is 1131 meters above sea level at the eastern end of the Bolkar Dağları mountain range belonging to the Taurus Mountains , to the east of which the Cilician Gate breaks through the Taurus chain. In Turkish it is named after the place Gülek Boğazı (Gülek Gorge).

A little south of the village, a road branches off from the highway to the east, which leads in numerous serpentines after six kilometers to the castle ruins Gülek Kalesi . The small Armenian castle from the 12th / 13th centuries Century guarded the Cilician Gate, which represented the most important Taurus crossing and the connection from the Anatolian heartland to Syria since ancient times.
