Günter Döding

Günter Döding (born September 4, 1930 in Isenstedt ; † August 8, 2005 ) was between 1978 and 1989 chairman of the food-pleasure-restaurants union (NGG).

Life

The trained cigar sorter Döding joined the NGG trade union in 1953. He acted as its 2nd chairman from 1966 and as 1st chairman from 1978 to 1989. Döding's name is closely linked to many of the NGG's pioneering collective bargaining policies. He is known as the "father of early retirement". In 1969, under his aegis, NGG was the first union to implement weekly working hours of less than 40 hours for shift workers, and in 1974 the first uniform wage agreement in the Federal Republic of Germany, which abolished the distinction between workers and employees. He also initiated the highly acclaimed NGG campaign Healthy foods in a healthy environment .

For his special achievements, Günter Döding was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit (1983) with a star (1987) and the Great Cross of Merit of Lower Saxony. In addition, Döding, who chaired the International Union of Food and Beverage Workers' Unions (IUF) for eight years, was an honorary member of the Israeli Federation of Trade Unions.

On February 19, 1989 Günter Döding attempted suicide. At that time he was deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the trading company co op AG , which was investigated for falsification of the accounts.

Döding had been married since 1953 and had a daughter.
