Günter Farchmin

Günter Farchmin (born June 9, 1913 in Berlin ; † October 24, 1997 there ) was a German scientist and university professor in the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Life

Farchmin, the son of an administrative inspector, graduated from secondary school and studied at the veterinary college in Berlin until he received his license to practice medicine in 1937. He then did military and war service in World War II . In 1941 he became a regimental veterinarian in the infantry. In early 1943, as head of a veterinary company, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets at the Battle of Stalingrad .

After the end of the Second World War, Farchmin returned to Germany in December 1948, became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and, in 1949, consultant for the main administration of health at the German Economic Commission (DWK). After the GDR was founded in 1949, he worked at the Ministry of Health .

Farchmin was at the forefront of building up the entire food hygiene system in the GDR. He achieved particular merits in the organization of food monitoring and in the collaboration in the publication of relevant legal provisions to ensure the greatest possible hygiene. In 1957 he accepted an appointment at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he became professor with a teaching position and director of the Institute for Food Hygiene at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
