Günter Gattermann

Günter Gattermann (born May 6, 1929 in Aßlar ; † December 21, 2018 in Düsseldorf ) was a German librarian and historian . From 1970 until his retirement in 1994 he headed the University and State Library in Düsseldorf .

Life

Gattermann studied history, classical philology, English and philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1956 he received his doctorate . After working at the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library , he became library director at the Clausthal Mining Academy in 1961 .

In 1970 he became chief library director at the University of Düsseldorf and built the new university and state library from the holdings of the former city and state library. In 1975 he was appointed honorary professor by the university . Gattermann had been retired since 1994.

In retirement, he was responsible for founding the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library from the former Saxon State Library and the University Library of the TU Dresden . In 1995/96 he headed the integration committee and in 1996 was the first acting general director of the SLUB Dresden. In January 1997 Jürgen Hering succeeded him as General Director.
