Günter Gentz (born November 11, 1912 in Hanover , † March 30, 1942 in the Soviet Union ) was a German Protestant theologian . His focus was the Greek church history.

Life

Günter Gentz ​​grew up in Hanover and Koblenz. From 1931 to 1936 he studied Protestant theology at Berlin University . After the two theological exams, he was an assistant pastor in a suburb of Berlin.

In addition to the parish office, Gentz ​​was scientifically active. On June 18, 1938, he passed the licentiate examination, on July 11, 1940, he was awarded a D. theol. PhD . His research area was ancient and medieval church history, which Hans Lietzmann in particular represented in Berlin . Together with Hans-Georg Opitz , Gentz ​​worked in the Berlin Church Fathers Commission , where he did preparatory work for the critical editions of Socrates Scholastikos and Theodorus Lector . Gentz ​​found an independent research area in the late Byzantine church history of Nikephoros Kallistus , whose sources he thoroughly examined. Gentz ​​also wrote journal articles and articles for the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity (RE: Easter , Philostorgios [3] ) and for the real dictionary for antiquity and Christianity (RAC).

After the outbreak of World War II , Gentz ​​was drafted into military service. He took part in the Russian campaign as a private in the field gendarmerie . On March 30th he fell "after being seriously wounded in a fight with partisans" (Eltester).

Gentz's source research on Nikephoros Kallistos was edited by Friedhelm Winkelmann after his death and appeared posthumously in 1966.
