Günter Harry Seidler (born May 31, 1951 in Schleswig ) is a German psychotherapist , psychotraumatologist, psychiatrist , psychosomatist and psychoanalyst . Since 2006 he has been a professor at the Medical Faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

After finishing high school in ancient languages, Seidler first studied theology , philosophy and German studies at the cathedral school in Schleswig and later medicine at the universities of Kiel and Göttingen . In 1978 he received his license to practice medicine and his doctorate as Dr. med. followed a year later with a thesis on "The psychosocial processing of chronic illness in multiple sclerosis sufferers and paraplegics". In 1998 Seidler completed his habilitation with a thesis on “Structural changes in self-reference during inpatient psychotherapy”.

Seidler is a specialist in neurology and psychiatry, as well as psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, training analyst, group training analyst, psychotraumatologist and EMDR specialist. At the Clinic for General Internal Medicine and Psychosomatics in the Center for Psychosocial Medicine of the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg, he headed the Psychotraumatology Section from 2002 until he retired in mid-2015 . His main research interests are violence research, historical trauma research, secondary trauma disorders and trauma therapy.

Works

In his first scientific work, Seidler dealt with the processing of experiences with chronic illness. This work brought him in touch with Erving Goffman's concept of stigma , and he turned to shame research. On June 4, 1989, he was awarded the Scientific Advancement Prize of the German Psychoanalytical Society (DPG) for his first draft for his book “The View of the Other” . He then worked out his approach to the “theory of alterity ”, which he founded by asking about the meaning of initially foreign, outside of the self, experience elements for self-genesis. In his habilitation thesis, he empirically tested his approach. For this work he was awarded the “Research Prize Psychotherapy in Medicine” on October 22, 1999.

His findings made him recognize the need for a paradigm shift, and he turned to psychotraumatology and helped to build it up in Germany. In 2007 he founded the magazine “Trauma and Violence. Research and Fields of Practice ”, which he published as the leading editor at Klett-Cotta until the end of 2019.
