Harald J. Freyberger

Harald Jürgen Freyberger (born May 25, 1957 in Hamburg ; † December 6, 2018 ) was a German doctor specializing in psychiatry and psychotherapy . From 1997 he was professor for psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

life and work

Harald Jürgen Freyberger obtained his university entrance qualification in Hanover in 1978 and studied human medicine in Hamburg and Zurich from 1980 to 1986 . From 1986 to 1993 he worked as a research assistant at the Clinic for Psychiatry at the Medical University of Lübeck and completed his training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and behavior therapy during this time . In 1987 he received his doctorate on individual statistical studies in psychotherapies.

From 1993 to 1995 he was senior physician with Horst Dilling at the Clinic for Psychiatry at the Medical University of Lübeck, where he qualified as a professor in 1996 on diagnostic issues in psychiatry and psychotherapy . In 1996/1997 he worked as a senior physician with Wolfgang Maier at the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . From December 1997 he was university professor for psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine and director of the clinic and polyclinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald in the Helios Hanseklinikum Stralsund .

Freyberger's work and research focuses on the classification, diagnosis and epidemiology of mental disorders, dissociative and post-traumatic stress disorders, psychiatric and psychotherapeutic intervention research as well as care and therapy research.

As co-editor of the journals Psychodynamische Psychotherapie , Zeitschrift für Psychiatrie, Psychologie und Psychotherapie , Trauma & Violence , psychotherapist and member of the editorial board of the journals Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics , European Addition Research and Suchttherapie , he wrote more than 500 scientific publications in journals and 19 books.

He died in December 2018 at the age of 61.

Social Commitment

Freyberger was committed to various groups of victims, such as the victims of political disintegration measures in the GDR, traumatized victims of violence, former children in the GDR, young people who were wronged in the GDR psychiatry, as well as victims of the GDR state doping. His research and initiated projects on possible political abuse of psychiatry by the Ministry for State Security of the GDR could not be completed by him before his death.

At the Stralsund Clinic, Freyberger initiated a comprehensive review of hospital history during the Third Reich and organized a series of commemorative events, as well as the erection of a memorial for patients deported in 1939 and trip thresholds to commemorate the victims of forced sterilization.

He was a member of the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology (DGPPN) , the Working Group for Methodology and Documentation in Psychiatry (AMDP), the Society for Neurology of the State of MV and the Society for Psychotherapy of the State of MV (GPT-MV). From 2016 to 2018 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lindau Psychotherapy Weeks .
