Günther Klemm (born November 10, 1929 in Neumünster ) is a former German soccer player who made 187 appearances as a goalkeeper from 1953 to 1963 in the Oberligen Süd and West .

career

FSV Frankfurt, 1953 to 1956

Günther Klemm, who came to Wiesbaden with his parents as early as 1935, was appointed as a player for SpVgg Nassau Wiesbaden at the end of the 1952/53 season for two appearances in the German national soccer team of amateurs . He guarded the goal of the DFB amateurs in the victorious games in April and June 1953 in Linz against Austria and in Wuppertal against France. The 1.78 m tall goalkeeper was characterized by agility and responsiveness. The black and blue from Bornheim from FSV Frankfurt signed the amateur goalkeeper for the 1953/54 round for the Oberliga Süd. As a result of Willibald Kreß's work as a coach , Klemm came into the hands of an expert in goalkeeping at the "Bernemer". In the opening game on August 16, 1953 in the stadium on Bornheimer Hang , the man from Wiesbaden made his debut in front of 20,000 spectators against VfB Stuttgart in the Oberliga Süd. The Stuttgart, finalists of the German soccer championship in 1953, prevailed with the winning goal by Erwin Waldner in the 89th minute of the game with 3-2 goals against the FSV. In this round, Klemm played all 30 league games of FSV Frankfurt, who came in seventh place. With this, the FSV had improved compared to the 11th place of the previous year, but the city rival Eintracht Frankfurt won the runner-up in the south. In the second year on Bornheimer Hang, center forward Berthold Buchenau reinforced the attack, Klemm was in goal in 19 games and FSV was in 6th place in the top group, but Eintracht maintained their lead in Frankfurt with fourth place. In his third year at FSV, goalkeeper Willi Rado overtook Klemm with 19 games against eleven of the ex-Wiesbaden player. Despite the additions of Hans Strittmatter and Herbert Rappsilber on the side of Richard Herrmann , the blue-blacks fell back to ninth place in the table and Klemm moved to the West for 1. 1. FC Köln, 1956 to 1960

When 1. FC Köln former amateur goalkeeper had its best placings in the league. As the successor to Günter Jansen who had moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach, coach Hennes Weisweiler used him in all 30 games of the round 1956/57. In his second year at 1. FC, Klemm grew up with Fritz Ewert, a promising and powerful competitor. Klemm was in 21 games, Ewert in nine games in the goal of Hennes Weisweiler's team. As runner-up, Cologne moved into the finals of the German soccer championship in 1958. He played in all five matches of the final against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (qualification), Hamburger SV, FK Pirmasens and 1. FC Nürnberg. Klemm then played the last nine games in the Oberliga West in the 1958/59 round. Viktoria Cologne, 1960 to 1963

At Viktoria he met again on coach Hennes Weisweiler and completed 67 Oberliga games in the last three rounds of the Oberliga West from 1960 to 1963. Despite the additions of Klaus Matischak , Willibert Kremer , Erich Ribbeck and Jürgen Sundermann , Viktoria 1962/63 could not qualify for the new Bundesliga from the 1963/64 season. Günther Klemm ended his active goalkeeping career in the summer of 1963 at the age of 34.

International missions, 1953 to 1962

In addition to the two appointments in the amateur national team, national coach Sepp Herberger tested the Nassau Wiesbaden goalkeeper in May / June 1953 in courses with three games against the professional team of the Bolton Wanderers . There were also two missions in a DFB selection on June 4 and 6, 1953 in Augsburg and Berlin against southern Germany and the Berlin city eleven. At the beginning of August 1953, Klemm was invited to a preparatory course for the first World Cup qualifier against Norway at the Malente sports school together with the other goalkeepers Toni Turek , Karl Adam and Helmut Henig . He was no longer used for DFB teams in the following years.

With the city selection Cologne he came in the round 1960/61 in three games of the fair cup against AS Roma to the train. The 2-0 victory on February 8, 1961 in Rome was an outstanding result against the professionals of coach Alfredo Foni .
