Giampaolo Menichelli (born June 29, 1938 in Rome ) is a former Italian football player . At club level, especially at AS Roma and Juventus Turin , he took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile with the national team of his home country .

Career

Club career

Giampaolo Menichelli, born on June 29, 1938 in the Italian capital Rome , also learned the craft of playing football in his hometown. He was trained in the youth departments of AS Roma and finally the attacker made his debut in 1957 in a Roma jersey . In the first team of the Serie A club, Menichelli was initially unable to prevail, he only came to two missions during the 1957/58 season . As a result, he was awarded in the two following seasons to the SS Sambenedettese Calcio and the AC Parma and then returned to his home club. With the match experience from two years of second division football, Giampaolo Menichelli also managed to gain a regular place at AS Roma. He played now from 1960 to 1963 for the capital city club and completed in this time 79 games in the context of the highest Italian football league, in which he scored fourteen goals.

In the summer of 1963 Giampaolo Menichelli joined the Italian record champions Juventus Turin . The striker was under contract in Turin for six years until 1969, during which time he made a total of 144 league games with 40 goals. In the 1966/67 season Menichelli won his only championship ever in the professional career with Juventus Turin. They finished Serie A in first place with a lead of one point over Inter Milan . With eleven goals, Menichelli made a decisive contribution to the championship success of coach Heriberto Herrera's team , making him by far the top scorer of his team. Giampaolo Menichelli and his employer had already triumphed in the Coppa Italia two years earlier . In the edition of 1964/65 they reached after victories over US Alessandria , AC Brescia , AC Lecco , FC Bologna and local rivals AC Turin the final, where they met Inter Milan. Juventus prevailed 1-0 in the final, the decisive goal came from Giampaolo Menichelli in the fourteenth minute of the game.

Giampaolo Menichelli played at Juventus Turin until 1969 before he looked for a new employer at AC Brescia. In Brescia he played in Serie A for a year, but rose with the club from this league. This was followed by another change, this time to the reigning Italian champion Cagliari Calcio . With the Sardinians Menichelli reached seventh place in Serie A in 1970/71 , but was only used in thirteen league games. After the end of the 1970/71 season, Giampaolo Menichelli ended his footballing career at the age of 33.

National team

Between 1962 and 1964 Giampaolo Menichelli came to a total of nine appearances in the Italian national football team . He succeeded in scoring. He was appointed to the Italian squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile by national coach Paolo Mazza . At the tournament Menichelli was used in two of the three Italian games. Already the first tournament game of the southern Europeans, the goalless draw against Germany , he completed. A little later he was also used in the game of Italy against hosts Chile , which went down in history as the Battle of Santiago , but did not have any serious effect. Only the last, but largely insignificant group game against Switzerland , Menichelli missed. It was here that Italy clinched their first victory at the 1962 World Cup 3-0.
