Günter Lorenz (General)

Günter Lorenz (born September 3, 1932 in Bad Doberan ) is a former officer of the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic . Most recently he held the rank of lieutenant general .

Military career

As the son of a locksmith, Lorenz initially worked as a worker after attending school for eight years and then completed an apprenticeship as a machine and engine fitter from 1948 to 1950. After graduation, he joined the German People's Police (DVP) on December 28, 1950 , where he was initially a student at the People's Police School in Priemerwald near Güstrow until 1952 . From 1952 to 1954 Lorenz, who had joined the SED in 1953 , was deputy commander for technology and equipment in the KVP office in Spechtberg . In 1954 he was sent to a military academy in the Soviet Union , which he attended until 1960.

After his return, Lorenz became deputy commander for technology and equipment in Panzer Battalion 8 , which he remained until 1962. In 1963 he was promoted to head of the armament department in the command of the V military district . Subsequently, from 1966 to 1975 he acted as deputy commander for technology and equipment in the 9th Panzer Division . From 1975 to 1983 Lorenz worked as head of the technology administration in the Ministry of National Defense (MfNV), where he was appointed major general on October 7, 1983 . Until his release from the NVA on September 30, 1990, he was deputy chief for technical security in the Ministry of Disarmament and Defense (MfAV). He had previously been promoted to lieutenant general on March 1, 1989 .

Lorenz is holder of the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze, holder of the Scharnhorst Order , as well as various other orders and decorations .
