Günter Radtke (formerly Günther Radtke ; * 27. February 1920 in Insterburg ; † 3. January 2018 in Hamburg ) was a German newspaper cartoonist , illustrator , painter and co-founder of the Star .

Radtke attended a school in Berlin, where he also went to art college. Radtke completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter (1935–1937) in the central publishing house of the NSDAP and was allowed to work as a draftsman at the 1936 Summer Olympics . He also attended evening classes at the Charlottenburg School of Applied Arts and then the higher graphic arts institute. In 1937 he switched to the illustrator trade and worked at Eher-Verlag for the magazines NS-Funk , Volksfunk and Die HJ . There Radtke published his first graphics. He thought up lurid and lurid depictions of everyday topics and also designed propaganda papers.

Radtke worked as a press illustrator for the German Africa Corps . In June 1942 he was in a military hospital on Tempelhofer Ufer in Berlin and then served for reports until the end of the war.
How Radtke spent the first post-war years is not known.

In his studio in Uetze , Radtke draws the majority of his graphics on large-format cardboard from Schöllershammer .

Illustrator at the star

As in 1948, the license application for the star of Henri Nannen was found Radtke is listed in the complaint as a future newspaper cartoonist. Nannen and Radtke probably met in Hanover in the post-war years and remained close friends throughout their lives. Radtke remained the star's chief illustrator for over 50 years. He made drawings for situations in which no camera was present and thus became an important contemporary witness of the 20th century. His drawings of the Stammheim trials or the sinking of the last German windjammer, the Pamir , are part of German press history.

Other works

Radtke occasionally worked as a draftsman for mare and geo . He also edited a few books and worked as Art Director for Aldus Books London and Bertelsmann Books (idea and design).

Radtke also worked as a freelance artist. For example, he designed the poster for the opening of the Emden art gallery. In addition, the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences owns 6 commissioned works by Radtke, which were created between 1994 and 2007.

Honors

In 2003 Radtke became an honorary citizen of the city of Uetze . A large picture of Radtke adorns the foyer of the town hall. Furthermore, two large-format paintings depicting the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ clothe a cemetery chapel in Uetze.
