Günter Schröder (born June 16, 1929 in Stettin ) is a German crop scientist . Thanks to his diverse public relations work, Schröder is one of the best-known East German agricultural scientists . Even after reunification, he continued his research throughout Germany.

Life path

Schröder spent his youth in Altdamm (Pomerania) and after the forced relocation in 1945 on the island of Rügen . After an agricultural apprenticeship, he graduated from the agricultural college in Bergen auf Rügen and Greifswald . He then studied at the Agricultural Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, which he successfully completed in 1955. He then worked for a year as a chief agronomist in agricultural practice in the Greifswald district.

His scientific career began in 1956 at the Institute for Plant Breeding in Gülzow-Güstrow . Under the direction of Professor Kress, he developed the agricultural regions for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the basis of physical geography and natural site conditions. In 1959 Schröder moved to the Institute for Agricultural Research and Research in Rostock, where he took over the management of the Schwerin branch. He received his doctorate in 1965 under Kurt Nehring at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Rostock as Dr. agr. After the dissolution of the Institute for Agricultural Experiments and Investigations, the Agricultural Institute in Schwerin took over the research in 1959. Schröder became head of the research group at this institute, where he developed a network of representative test stations. After assigning these test stations to the Central Office for Varieties of the GDR in 1969, he headed the variety testing in what is now Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In 1985 he moved to the Institute for Plant Breeding Gülzow at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Here he took over the management of the testing department. After the reunification of Germany he worked under the direction of Norbert Makowski in the research center for renewable raw materials and horticulture on Germany-wide projects.

Schröder gave guest lectures at the University of Halle and taught at the agricultural engineering school in Güstrow-Bockhorst and at the technical school for agriculture in Güstrow-Schabernack.
