Günter Sonnenberg (RAF member)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Günter Sonnenberg (born July 21, 1954 in Karlsruhe ) is a former member of the terrorist organization Red Army Fraktion (RAF). He was sentenced to twice life imprisonment in 1978 and parole in 1992.

Life

In the early 1970s, Sonnenberg moved into a shared apartment in Karlsruhe with Adelheid Schulz , Christian Klar and Knut Folkerts - all of whom were later convicted as RAF terrorists . He was suspected of participating in the murder of the Federal Public Prosecutor Siegfried Buback and his two companions on April 7, 1977.

Sonnenberg was subjected to a personal check on the morning of May 3, 1977 together with Verena Becker in Singen , August-Ruf-Strasse 4, in the "Café Hanser" 47 ° 45 ′ 35.1 ″  N , 8 ° 50 ′ 25.4 ″  O . When the two could not identify themselves, they were escorted to their vehicle. To avoid arrest, Sonnenberg and Becker shot the two police officers. Both police officers were injured, the officer Wolfgang Seliger was life-threatening after Sonnenberg shot him several times from a short distance until the magazine of his pistol was empty. The two police officers did not fire a shot. Sonnenberg and Becker had taken the train from Bonn to Singen the evening before and wanted to cross the green border into Switzerland. Sonnenberg and Becker were able to escape by capturing a passing car. After chasing the police by singing, they then pulled their vehicle onto a dirt road and tried to escape on foot. However, the terrorists were arrested after an exchange of fire in which Sonnenberg was hit in the back of the head and Becker in the thigh. The weapon that had been used in the assassination attempt on Federal Prosecutor Siegfried Buback was seized upon arrest. One of the policemen had picked up this weapon and fired the shot from it that hit Sonnenberg in the head. Sonnenberg was then in a coma for four weeks .

Sonnenberg was sentenced to twice life imprisonment in Stuttgart on April 26, 1978 and released on parole on May 15, 1992. The proceedings against Sonnenberg in the Buback case were dropped for health reasons. He was one of the prisoners who were supposed to be released in the fall of 1977 by the Schleyer kidnapping .

On December 14, 2007 it became known that the federal prosecutor had applied for joint detention for Günter Sonnenberg . This was supposed to get Sonnenberg to name the shooter in the Buback murder. However, this application was rejected by the Federal Court of Justice on January 3, 2008 with reference to the discontinued proceedings because Sonnenberg might otherwise have had to incriminate himself.

Sonnenberg claims to live in Frankfurt am Main .
