Günter Vojta (born October 23, 1928 in Bautzen ) is a German theoretical physicist .

Life

Vojta attended elementary school and high school in Kamenz , was drafted as an air force helper in 1944 and initially worked as a construction worker after the end of the Second World War, before he was able to graduate from high school in Kamenz in 1948. After a brief activity as a new teacher, he studied physics at the University of Leipzig from 1948 . After completing his studies in 1954, he was a research assistant at the University of Leipzig until 1958 and then until 1960 department head at the Institute for Physical Substance Separation Leipzig of the then German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (AdW) as well as a lecturer at the University of Leipzig. In 1957 he received his doctorate there with the thesis A theory of saturation in nuclear magnetic resonance . Bernhard Kockel and Artur Lösche were reviewers for the dissertation . After his habilitation in 1960 he was head of the statistical physics department at the Central Institute for Isotope and Radiation Research at the AdW from 1961 to 1970 . From 1962 to 1970 he was also honorary professor for theoretical physics at the University of Leipzig. In 1970 he became department director at the Central Institute for Solid State Physics and Materials Research in Dresden and honorary professor at the Technical University of Dresden . From 1984 until his retirement in 1993 he was a full professor of theoretical physics at the University of Leipzig.

Vojta worked specifically in the field of statistical physics and the application of its methods in solid state and plasma physics as well as in physical and theoretical chemistry. He also published works on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.

In 1970 he became a corresponding and in 1975 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1986 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From 1993 to 2011 he was a member of the Leibniz Society .
