Günter Behm (since 1953 Behm-Blancke) (born March 10, 1912 in Berlin ; † March 23, 1994 in Weimar ) was a German prehistoric scientist . As director of the Museum for Prehistory and Early History of Thuringia and university professor, he dealt intensively with the pre- and early history of Central Germany.

Professional career and earnings

Günter Behm-Blancke received his doctorate in 1943 with the thesis Culture and Tribal History of the Elbe-Havel Germans of the 3rd to 5th Century at the Berlin University . In October 1947 he was appointed acting director of the Prehistoric Museum of the Institute for Prehistoric Archeology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 1949 he completed his habilitation in Jena with a thesis on sacrifice and magic in the Germanic village of the Roman Empire and became a lecturer for prehistory, in 1951 a professor, in 1953 a professor with a teaching assignment and in 1961 a professor with a full teaching assignment for prehistory and early history (corresponds to extraordinary Professor) appointed. Until his retirement in 1977, Behm-Blancke was also director of the Museum for Pre- and Early History of Thuringia in Weimar .

Behm-Blancke's name is primarily associated with the famous excavations of the Bronze Age cult caves near Frankenhausen and with the uncovering and exploration of the moor sanctuary of Oberdorla . In addition, as the museum director of Weimar, he set up an extremely well-functioning floor care system as early as the 1950s. One of his greatest merits was that he was able to convey the archaeological activity and the results from it in a very interesting and lively manner to the “ordinary” citizens in many lectures and on-site discussions.

tomb

He is buried in the historical cemetery in Weimar .

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, Behm-Blancke was placed a memorial stone in the museum village on the sacrificial moor.
