Preliminary remark

In the relevant sources there is different information about both the family name and the locations involved. At dfb.de the name Knott is used, while at weltfussball.de Kott (without n) is used. In the print media it is also called Kott in connection with Leipzig. It is incorrect to say that the player was supposed to have played a game at ZSK Vorwärts Berlin on January 9, 1955. Before and after that he played for SC Lok Leipzig. At DSFS, the ZSK game is assigned to a player named Knott (with n), but with Kott's date of birth (without n). The fuwo match report of January 11, 1955 reads: "We observed the young Knott, a talented man who joined the KVP (ZSK) from Plauen with great interest". In the first version of the article here, the family name "Kott" is used, as it is derived from the majority of sources.

Athletic career

When in the 1949/50 season with the DS-Liga, the later GDR-Oberliga , a nationwide top soccer class began its game operation for the first time in the Eastern Zone , the newly founded ZSG Industrie Leipzig was one of the founding members. The 18-year-old Günther Kott was also in their league line-up. Coach Fritz Krauss immediately used him in the first two point games and let him play as an inside striker. Then Krauss decided on the previous regular players Gerhard Hübler and Werner Steuer , and Kott was no longer called up until the end of the season. In the following two seasons, Kott was not used in the 1st team and was therefore not part of the group of players who won the league championship title in 1951 under the new name BSG Chemie. Only under the coach Walter Rose did he return to the top division in chemistry. In the 1952/53 season, Kott was used in the second half of the season, but played only eight games of the 15 league games, in which he was four times in different positions in the starting line-up. When Alfred Kunze took over the team for the 1953/54 season , Kott moved up to the extended team. In his 18 appearances in 28 league games, he played alternately in defense and midfield. In 1954/55, when the Leipziger started as SC Lokomotive Leipzig , Kott fell out of the regular eleven. From the 1st to the 7th matchday he played four more times in the league, two of which were in the starting line-up. After a long break, he played his last league game on matchday 19. At the end of the season, Günther Kott left SC Lok Leipzig after 33 league games. In autumn 1955 he moved to BSG Lok Cottbus in the third-class II. GDR League .
