Günther Nürnberger

Günther Nürnberger (born January 13, 1948 in fire ; † May 11, 2013 ) was a German mathematician .

Life

In 1975 Nürnberger completed his mathematics studies at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg with a doctorate . His dissertation was entitled Duality of Sections for Metric Projection and of Continuations of Compact Operators . He then completed his habilitation there and received his first two-year professorship at the University of Mannheim . From 1985 to 1989 he was one of the professors who worked as part of the Fiebiger Plan at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. In 1989, Nürnberger received a chair at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Mannheim, which he held until he left active service in January 2013.

Scientific activity

Nürnberger was active in the field of numerical mathematics and approximation theory . Between 1993 and 1994 he was Dean of the Faculty for Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Mannheim. He was also the director of the Institute for Mathematics and a long-term member of the Faculty Council.

He has written over 100 publications and has edited various scientific journals including the Journal of Approximation Theory . His book Approximation by spline functions was often used in lectures and seminars on splines .
