After a break from working at Bosch , he was employed at the Hechingen high-voltage laboratory in the department of the MPI for Stratosphere Physics from 1951 , where he graduated in 1954. In 1957 he received his doctorate from the TH Stuttgart. From 1957 he was an assistant at the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Frankfurt / Main. In the summer of 1957 he was in Los Angeles for a US stay, from 1960 to 1962 he was in the Brookhaven National Laboratory . In 1963 he completed his habilitation in Frankfurt / Main.

In 1966 Nikolaus Fiebiger took over the newly established chair for experimental physics ( nuclear physics ) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He held this office until 1972, after which he was Vice-Rector until 1973. As president, he led the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 1975 until his retirement in 1990. “As president, the physicist ... made decisive contributions to the development and expansion of the technical faculty founded in 1966, to the establishment of the two Fraunhofer institutes and to the Promotion of microelectronics in Erlangen.
