history

Until the 19th century

Marktredwitz was first mentioned in a document in 1140, at that time still as Redwitz ("Radewitze"). The local noble family was the von Redwitz family , which later also belonged to the Franconian knight circle . Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian transferred Redwitz in 1339 to the Waldsassen monastery under the abbot Franz Kübel , who sold the town to the Free Imperial City of Eger just two years later . As a result, Marktredwitz henceforth belonged as an exclave to the Egerland and thus to the Austrian crown land of Bohemia . In 1788 the Chemische Fabrik Marktredwitz (CFM), one of the very first chemical factories , was founded. In 1816 Redwitz came to the Kingdom of Bavaria in exchange for the city of Vils , which Bavaria gave to Austria .

20th century

The place received city rights in 1907. The market title, which has been used for centuries, became part of the place name on December 16, 1907. After twelve years, the city of Marktredwitz became a district on December 1, 1919.

Before the elevation to the city, the place was called Markt Redwitz. The colloquial term "Rawetz" goes back to the old place name. In the course of time, the cities of Marktredwitz and Waldershof have moved closer together due to construction work and form an agglomeration with almost 22,000 inhabitants. The Wunsiedel -Marktredwitz-Waldershof area covers many supraregional areas of responsibility and has the status of a possible regional center .

In the course of the municipal reform , Marktredwitz lost its status as an independent town on July 1, 1972 and was incorporated into the Wunsiedel district. It is the largest city in the county. In 1985, severe environmental damage was discovered on the premises of the Marktredwitz Chemical Factory (CFM). In particular, the soil and water were polluted with mercury . The factory was closed, the premises and the surrounding area were completely renovated. The Köseine shopping center (KEC) is now located on the renovated area.

21st century

In 2006 the cross-border garden show Marktredwitz-Cheb took place in Marktredwitz . On November 14, 2019, the BR opened a regional studio in Marktredwitz, from which two correspondents report on topics from the districts of Wunsiedel and Tirschenreuth.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1939, the previously independent municipality of Dörflas near Marktredwitz and parts of the municipality of Oberredwitz were incorporated; on July 1, 1972 Leutendorf was added. The municipality of Thölau was incorporated on July 1, 1974, Korbersdorf on January 1, 1975 and Wölsau on January 1, 1976. Parts of the dissolved community of Lengenfeld near Groschlattengrün followed on July 1, 1976, Wölsauerhammer and parts of the dissolved community of Haid with fewer than 50 inhabitants on January 1, 1977. Brand near Marktredwitz and Lorenzreuth were incorporated on January 1, 1978.
