Oskar Loew (born April 2, 1844 in Marktredwitz ; † January 26, 1941 in Berlin ) was a German chemist .

Loew was Justus von Liebig's last pupil . In 1909 he published a paper on the lime factor , in which he showed that a certain ratio of calcium to magnesium must be present in the soil for optimal plant growth . His other areas of work include the synthesis of formaldehyde from methanol and the effects of small amounts of poison.

Loew went to Japan in 1893 at the invitation of the Department of Agriculture at the University of Tokyo and taught agricultural chemistry there, valued as a teacher and practitioner, until he left in 1907.

Loew was buried in the Lichterfelde park cemetery.

Honors and memberships

Oskar Loew is an honorary citizen of Marktredwitz. In 1891 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
