The Kössein is a brook in the Bavarian Fichtelgebirge , which rises on the Kosseine mountain and flows into the Röslau from the right after an eastern, then northeastern run of 19 km near the village of Seußen in the town of Arzberg in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge .

Surname

The Kössein is popularly called "Kossine", and on the upper reaches also "Ziegenbach". Kosseine or Kössein is derived from the mountain name “Chozin”, first mentioned in 1285. This is of Slavic origin and means goat mountain, perhaps a reference to the livestock farming that used to be there.

geography

Spring streams

The brook Kössein arises on the eastern slope of the Kosseine ( 939  m above sea level ) from several source brooks, the longest of which is at the highest source at about 773  m above sea level. NHN Höhe on the southeast side of the saddle between Kossine and the neighboring Burgstein ( 879  m above sea level ) rises. The Püttnerfelsbrunnen is a contained source. At 599  m above sea level NHN , a good one kilometer northeast of the village of Kössain in the town of Waldershof on the border with the Tröstauer Forst-Ost, all essential spring branches are united and the stream now takes the approximate eastern direction of its upper course.

Close to the south-east of the Kosseine summit and at 829  m above sea level. NHN is the so-called Kosseinebrunnen a little outside of the catchment area of the Kössein in that of the Kösseinbach, which drains southwards over the Höllbach to the Fichtelnaab .

course

The Kössein passes this weir in the Auenpark in Marktredwitz, and part of the water is diverted to the side to generate electricity
On the lower reaches of the Kössein near Seußen with the late baroque, three-bay Markgrafenbrücke

The stream that was created in the main course in the Tröstau Forest flows eastwards from the forest in the urban area of Waldershof through Rodenzenreuth to the small town itself, which it crosses on the southern edge of the settlement core . At the south-eastern edge of the settlement, the Walbenbach flows into it, which drains a large area in the south-east , especially via its long inlet Steinbach . At this inflow, the Kössein bends to the northeast, a direction that it maintains roughly to the mouth.

From Waldershof the brook meanders in wide loops towards Marktredwitz, under a railway bridge on the Weiden – Oberkotzau railway line ; Immediately afterwards the Ödweißbach flows into the Auenpark on the outskirts of Marktredwitz from the right and from the south , shortly afterwards the smaller Trebnitzbach meets the Kössein on the opposite side. After the straightened course through Marktredwitz, the A 93 crosses the brook on the other edge of the city , which then meanders through the Wölsau district on the left bank, opposite the Rohrbach flows. After Wölsauerhammer (right) and Neu-Haag (left), the Kössein flows through the Marktredwitz district of Brand and then changes to the area of the small town of Arzberg , where, after a short rest of the route at the Krippnermühle, it crosses under the baroque Markgrafenbrücke and opposite the parish of Seußen from the right about 476  m above sea level NHN flows into the Röslau , a tributary of the Eger .

Catchment area

The Kössein drains a catchment area of 94.4 km² in total approximately in an east-northeast direction. The stream is located in the northern third of the catchment area, from Marktredwitz it is never more than two kilometers away from the receiving, north-flowing Röslau. The contour of the catchment area is roughly a triangle with a corner in the northwest on the summit of the Kosseine ( 939  m above sea level ), where the stream arises, a second in the south on the plate (at 946  m above sea level the highest point of the Catchment area), on the slope of which the main strand Steinbach of the right tributary Walbenbach rises, and the third corner in the east-northeast not far from the at 476  m above sea level. NHN estuary.

From the Köseine to the mouth of the Kössein, the area on the left is drained by short streams to the Röslau. At a short distance on the eastern edge of the catchment area near the mouth, the Feisnitz , the next Röslau tributary, borders . Up to the Steinknock ( 707  m above sea level ), the southeastern catchment area borders the drainage area of the Wondreb , whose tributaries Lausnitz and Seibertsbach arise close behind, then against that of the Wiesau , which flows into the Waldnaab and that of the Fichtelnaab tributary Heinbach . Beyond the third side of the catchment area between the Platte and the Köseine, the Höllbach also drains to the Fichtelnaab.

Since Röslau and Wondreb drain via Eger and Elbe to the North Sea, while Wald- and Fichtelnaab feed their water via Naab and Danube to the Black Sea , the catchment area border is a section of the great European continental watershed, roughly from the Steinknock to the Kosseine .

use

The water of the Kössein used to drive mills, which have mostly become small hydroelectric power stations, and they were used for fishing. Strong mercury- containing waste water discharges of the chemical factory Marktredwitz made later this usage almost impossible to live in the water fish are not suitable for consumption because of their heavy metal content. The abandoned factory has since been torn down, and the stream has not yet recovered from the strain.

geology

From Waldershof the Kössein runs on the bottom of the Waldershofer Senke, a south-western extension of the Egergraben . The depression continues to Hohenberg and flows into the Eger basin , the lower section is traversed by the Röslau. In contrast to the rest of the Fichtelgebirge arch, tertiary sediments dominate the valley floor , interrupted by volcanic deposits and marble deposits .
