Günther Schmidt (born December 16, 1921 in Nietleben ; † June 28, 2017 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German physicist .

Life

Günther Schmidt was the second child of the general manager Kurt Schmidt and his wife, née Gottwald. He attended elementary school in Nietleben from 1928 to 1932 and then until 1940 the Latina of the Francke Foundations in Halle. From August 1940 Schmidt studied physics at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg , but was drafted into the Wehrmacht in February 1941. After returning from British internment in 1946, he continued studying physics and took the diploma examination in June 1950.

Günther Schmidt worked as an assistant and assistant at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg since 1950 , since 1952 with a teaching position on experimental physics for chemists and farmers. He received his doctorate in 1954 under Wilhelm Messerschmidt and completed his habilitation in 1960 with a thesis on piezoelectricity and electrostriction of the salt of seignette . In teaching, Günther Schmidt was particularly involved in basic studies with experimental lectures. In 1971 he wrote the compact compendium of physics as a textbook , the third edition of which appeared in 1975. In 1986 Günther Schmidt retired. Until 1992 he was the editor of the annual lectures of the spring schools for ferroelectricity that he initiated .

Günther Schmidt was married to Gertrud Schmidt and had two sons. He was buried in the Kröllwitz cemetery.
