Günther Schweizer

Günther Schweizer (born March 7, 1938 in Ebingen , Württemberg; † April 12, 2020 in Rösrath ) was a German geographer and genealogist .

Live and act

Günther Schweizer was the son of Emil Schweizer, the principal of studies, and his wife Hedwig geb. Leypold. He studied at the universities of Tübingen , Göttingen and Aix-en-Provence , the subjects geography , geology and mathematics and graduated in 1964 with the exam to become a teacher and in 1966 with the promotion from. He received his doctorate in Tübingen with a dissertation on the geomorphology of the French Maritime Alps. He was a scientific assistant, in 1976 scientific counselor and professor at the Geographical Institute of the University of Tübingen , since 1972 also scientific coordinator of the research project " Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East ". In 1975 he completed his habilitation in Tübingen with studies on the Vansee and Urmiasee regions in eastern Anatolia and north-western Iran . In 1979 he accepted a position at the University of Cologne , where he was full professor and director of the Geographical Institute until 1999 . Scientific focus was initially on geomorphology, later on geography of the high mountains , urban geography , and the regional geography of the Middle East .

Since the 1990s Günther Schweizer turned to family research and published a number of papers on scientific genealogy. In 2005 he founded the Genealogical Working Group Tübingen, which he headed until his resignation in 2017. In 2018 he was made an honorary member of the Association for Family Studies in Baden-Württemberg (VFKBW).

Günther Schweizer lived with his wife Brigitte geb. Merchant in Tübingen . The couple had two daughters. In January 2020, he and his wife moved back to Rösrath , where the family had previously lived. He died on Easter Sunday 2020 at the age of 82.
