Günther Sembdner

Günther Sembdner (born April 21, 1931 ; † February 12, 2009 ) was a German biologist .

Life

The biologist Sembdner his doctorate in 1962 at the Technical University of Dresden for Doctor of Science (Dr. rer. Nat.). His dissertation dealt with the reactions of plants to infestation by the potato roundworm Heterodera rostochiensis . In 1970 he completed his habilitation in Halle with the thesis “Occurrence, metabolism and biological effectiveness of gibberellins ”.

Sembdner worked as a biologist at the Institute for Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben , and later at the Institute for Biochemistry of Plants in Halle (Saale) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , now the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry . In addition to herbal natural substances, his main field of work was the study of plant hormones (gibberellins, abscisic acid , cytokinins , jasmonates ) and synthetic growth regulators . As part of these investigations, the first gibberellin conjugate - GA8-2-O-glucoside - was isolated from firebeans ( Phaseolus coccineus L. ) under his guidance . [1]
