Günther Stiege (* 1935 ; † January 14, 2020 ) was a German mathematician , computer scientist and university professor . In 1974 he was appointed to the Technical University of Braunschweig as one of the first professors for computer science. He did research in the areas of operating systems, graph theory and networks.

life and work

Stiege studied mathematics at the University of Hanover , where he obtained his doctorate in mathematics under Wilhelm Quade in 1966 with the dissertation: "Minimal basic quantities and series developments in topological linear spaces" and completed his habilitation in 1971. After completing his doctorate, he initially worked at AEG , where he was involved in the development of the BS2 operating system for the TR 440 mainframe computer . In 1974 he was appointed as one of the first professors for computer science at the Technical University of Braunschweig for the chair of information systems, where the Institute for Operating Systems and Computer Networks was established under his leadership . In 1989 he followed a call to the University of Hildesheim , where, as a member of a working group, he prepared the introduction of the diploma course in computer science in 1984. There he headed the Institute for Operating Systems and Computer Networks and was Vice Rector of the University of Hildesheim from 1992 to 1995. In 1998 he went to the University of Oldenburg , where he headed the department for operating systems and distributed systems. At the then computer science department and as a member of the affiliated institute OFFIS, his research focus was on practical computer science, where he worked closely with industrial companies. After his retirement in 2001, he remained closely associated with the university, continued to publish his research results and as a lecturer regularly held the courses "Graphs and Graph Algorithms" and "Networks and Optimization" at the University of Hildesheim until 2014.
