Günther Uhlig (* 1937 in Königsberg an der Eger ) is a German architect and university lecturer , author and architectural theorist and co-editor of Arch + , the magazine for architecture and urbanism.

Life

Günther Uhlig studied architecture, urban planning and social sciences at the TH Munich , TU Berlin and FU Berlin . In 1972 he became a research assistant and later an academic adviser at the chair for planning theory in the architecture department of RWTH Aachen University . In 1981 he received his doctorate on the subject of the collective model of a kitchen house . Housing reform and the architectural debate between the women's movement and functionalism and presented a discourse analysis with his dissertation . At the same time he created a standard work to which various other publications refer.

From 1980 to 1982 he was advisor to the building senator for the International Building Exhibition in Berlin . 1984–2003 Günther Uhlig taught as a professor at the Chair for Housing, Settlement and Design at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) . From 1987–1992 he was chairman of the Deutscher Werkbund Baden-Württemberg and since 1992 has represented the German university professors in the field of architecture and planning in the advisory committee of the European Commission in Brussels. In 1991 he founded the office for urban research, planning and architecture in Karlsruhe with a focus on urban development planning . Günther Uhlig was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research (IRS) from 1994 to 2000 , and from 1999 to 2001 chief architecture editor of the Italian architecture magazine Domus . After his retirement , Uhlig received teaching positions at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung HfG, Karlsruhe (2002), at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (2003–2004), and at the Technical University of Darmstadt (2005–2006).
