Günther Vinek

Günther Vinek (born March 11, 1939 in Vienna ; † September 28, 2010 ibid) was an Austrian computer scientist and statistician. He was a full professor at the University of Vienna and its vice- rector from 2000 to 2007.

Life

Vinek studied chemistry at the University of Vienna from 1957 to 1965, where he did his doctorate sub auspiciis Praesidentis . He was initially employed at the Institute for Physical Chemistry and in 1968 moved to the Institute for Statistics. In 1970 he completed his habilitation in statistics and applied computer science at what was then the University of Social and Economic Sciences in Linz (today: Johannes Kepler University Linz ). 1970 to 1973 he was head of the computer center of the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. During this time, in 1972, his habilitation in Linz was also recognized by the law faculty of the University of Vienna.

From 1973 to 1976 he was a full professor for operations research and applied computer science at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . In 1975/76 he was dean of the technical and natural sciences faculty .

In 1976 he was called back to the University of Vienna, to the chair of statistics. There he was full professor for statistics and applied computer science. From 1989 to 1991 he was head of the inter-university IT center. From 1995 to 2000 he was head of the data engineering department at the Institute for Applied Computer Science and Information Systems, then head of the Business Information Systems department at the Institute for Computer Science and Information Systems. From January 1, 2000 to September 30, 2007 he was Vice Rector of the University of Vienna for Information Management and Organization for two periods .

He retired on September 30, 2007. In 2007 Vinek was awarded the title of Honorary Senator of the University of Vienna.
