The Belted Cardinalfish ( Sphaeramia orbicularis ) is a small, ten centimeter long marine fish that occurs in the western, tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Ryūkyū Islands , Kiribati , Belau , the Mariana Islands and the Carolines and New Caledonia .

The belted cardinalfish is tall and green-gray in color. The head is spotted, the first dorsal fin on the front edge and the pelvic fins on the rear edge are black. A broad, dark band extends between the leading edge of the first dorsal fin and the anus. There are scattered dark spots on the back of the body. The mouth is large and above all . The second dorsal fin, anal fin and caudal fin are transparent.

Way of life

The Belted Cardinalfish live near the coast in small groups between mangroves , rocks, scree and the piers of port facilities, at depths of up to five meters. They are nocturnal and feed on zooplankton , especially small crustaceans . Like all cardinalfish, the fish are mouthbrooders . They usually spawn in the evening hours just before the new and full moon . The male takes the clutch in its mouth and does not eat anything until the larvae hatch after eight days. The larvae initially live pelagically . With a length of seven centimeters the males become sexually mature, with six centimeters the females become.
