GNP-Crescendo Records is an independent jazz and soundtrack label founded by Gene Norman and based in Hollywood . It emerged from the Gene Norman Presents (then GNP ) label, founded in 1954 , and is continued by his son Neil Norman.

history

Normann initially wanted to publish recordings of concerts he produced, above all from his Just Jazz series of events . The first ten releases were 25cm LPs, which included the Clifford Brown - Max Roach album In Concert . Around 90 albums followed in 30 cm format (12 inch LP) by 1963. The first 12-inch album was a concert recording by the Charlie Ventura Orchestra with Jackie Cain & Roy Kral . From 1963, the GNP label focused exclusively on pop music. In the later decades jazz was also produced again (e.g. Gary Burton , Bill Watrous ).

The label includes recordings by jazz musicians such as Lionel Hampton , Dizzy Gillespie , Stan Kenton , Charlie Ventura , Max Roach , Clifford Brown , Gerry Mulligan , Teddy Buckner , Art Tatum , Duke Ellington , Spud Murphy , Frank Morgan , Louis Armstrong and Marty Paich / Jimmy Giuffre , available. The label also released Latin and pop music records by Machito , Jack Constanzo, Eddie Cano , Tito Puente , Walter Wanderley ; since 1966 the records of the rock band The Seeds have also been released there. Some of the label's jazz albums were initially re-released as compact discs on the Fresh Sound Records label .

Soundtracks , for example from the Star Trek series, were also released later ; Queen Ida's album On Tour earned the label its first Grammy in 1983 .
